Nottinghamshire County Councils Building Better Communities programme in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services are offering to plant an oak tree in Sherwood Forest for every Christmas tree that is recycled this year.

The saplings being planted come from acorns dropped by the Major Oak and have been grown locally at Sherwood Pines Nursery.

Residents of Nottinghamshire who recycle their Christmas tree at one the County's Household Waste Recycling Centres will be given an acorn voucher which will enable them to dedicate an oak tree to someone or something special in a commemorative book at Sherwood Forest.  They will also receive a free commemorative coin and scroll and action the planting of a sapling oak tree on their behalf in the ancient forest.

The parish is served by a post office and general store,  Anglican and Methodist churches, a primary school, public house, an equipped village park and numerous businesses.
